The Portrait of a Lady
The author’s parents went to live in the city. Hence the young author was left with his grandmother till his parents settled well in the city. During his childhood, the author studied in the village school which was attached to the temple. As the author was young and the school was attached to the temple, the grandmother accompanied the author to school. The grandmother carried stale chapattis and fed the dogs while returning home from school. When the author went abroad for higher education, the grandmother knew that she could not help the changes and accepted the fact. So the grandmother did not feel sentimental. Every afternoon, the grandmother spent half an hour for feeding the sparrows. That half an hour was the happiest time of the day for grandmother. After five years, the author came back home. The next morning, she fell ill and she predicted her death. In the evening, thousands of sparrows sat scattered near the grandmother’s corpse. They flew away quietly.
