Once upon a Time
i. Explain the things the poet has learnt when he grew into an adult.
ii. T his poem is nothing but a criticism of modern life. Justify this statement.
iii. ‘ Face is the index of the mind.’ Does this adage concur with the views of the poet?
In this poem, the poet explains the behaviour of the past and present people. The poet is talking to his son. The people of the past laughed wholeheartedly. Nowadays, people laugh showing only their teeth. Their eyes are without any warmth of feeling. People shake hands artificially which expresses their fake intimacy. In the good olden days, when people shaked hands with love and affection. They say “come again” only from their mouth and not from their hearts. They have a cocktail face – a face showing mixed emotions. They say “good bye” in words with “good riddance” in mind. The poet has also learned to wear an artificial smile on his face. The poet wants to relearn how to laugh from his son. The poet wants the younger generation to behave sincerely.
