Elucidate with reference to, ‘On the Rule of the Road’.
Once a lady walked in the middle of the road. According to the lady, liberty was an entitlement to do anything. Rule of the road means reducing liberties of everybody is preserving liberties of all. There is a danger of the world getting 'liberty drunk'. Individual liberty should be curtailed because it may affect public liberty. When a reasonable person's actions affect other person’s liberty, he would understand that curtailment of private liberty ensures public liberty, social order and also to avoid universal chaos. According to the author, liberty is not a personal affair only, but the social contract. We are more conscious of the imperfections of others than of our own. A reasonable consideration for the rights or feelings of others is the foundation of social contract. We must believe that little habits of common people intercourse make up the great sum of life. Thus we can sweeten our lives journey.
