The narrator met the two brothers, Nicola and Jacopo at the outskirts of Verona.

The boy’s shabby appearance of worn out clothes and tangled hair made driver not to approve of the narrator buying fruits from the boys.

The boys preferred to save money for their sister’s tuberculosis treatment.

No, the boys were not saving money to go the States. They were saving money for their sister’s tuberculosis treatment.

Lucia was suffering from tuberculosis of the spine.

During war, Germans killed the boy’s father and destroyed their house. So their hatred towards Germans made the boys join the resistance movement.

Nicola was wearing a damaged jersey and cut-off khaki pants. Jacopo was wearing a shortened army tunic gathered in loose folds. They both had brown skins, tangled hair and earnest eyes.

The boys were talking to their sister Lucia.  She was about 20 years old and resembled her brothers. She was wearing lace jacket and her eyes were soft and tender.

They suffered from starvation and cold weather. They stayed in the rubble. Their sister was suffering from tuberculosis of spine.

16. The narrator did not utter a word and preferred to keep the secret to himself. Why? Substantiate the statement with reference to the story.

The narrator understood that the boys did not want anybody’s sympathy or charity. He wanted the boys feel that their secret was safe. So he did not utter a word.
