I. Do as Directed

1. Ramesh changed his dress and went out to play. (Rewrite as a simple sentence)

2. At the age of six, Varsha started learning music. (into Complex)

3. As Varun is a voracious reader, he buys a lot of books. (into Simple)

4. Walk carefully lest you will fall down. (into Complex)

5. Praveen ran into the field so that he might congratulate the winners. (Rewrite as a simple sentence)

6. He is sick but he attends the rehearsal. (into Simple)

7. If Meena reads more, she will become proficient in the language. (into Compound)

8. He confessed that he was guilty. (into Simple)

9. The boy could not attend the special classes due to his mother’s illness. (into Compound)

10. He followed my suggestion. (into Complex)

11. Besides being a singer, she is also a dancer. (Rewrite as a compound sentence)

12. The trio met at the station. Varsha left for Madurai. (Change into a complex sentence)

13. Smita carried out the survey and presented her report. (Rewrite as a simple sentence)

14. Unless you have a valid passport you cannot leave the country. (Rewrite as a compound sentence)

20. Ram did not know Hindi. So he wanted a translator. (change into a complex sentence)

II. Combine each of the following pairs of sentences into a single sentence.

a) I met a man at the party. He is the Chairman of a computer form.

b) Mahatma Gandhi stood for Ahimsa. The whole world knows it.

c) Concentrate on your strengths. You will reap success in your life,

d) Consider all the facts once again. Then make your decision.

e) A number of books are missing from the library. Measures should be taken to retrieve them.

 

III. Change into other two kinds of sentences

1. Ramu is too poor to buy a bicycle.

2. Despite his old age, Raghav walked fast.

3. In the event of not consulting a doctor, you cannot recover.

4. On seeing the teacher, the children stood up.

5. Due to a heavy downpour, the match was cancelled.

6. Work hard or you will not succeed.

9. In case of not obeying the law, you will be punished.

12. The word is so difficult that I cannot pronounce it.

14. Unless you study well, you will not score good marks.

 

IV. Combine the pairs of sentences below into simple, complex and compound

1. Radha was ill. She was not hospitalized.

2. The students were intelligent. They could answer the questions correctly.

3. I must get a visa. I can travel abroad.

4. I saw a tiger. It was wounded.

5. There was a bandh. The shops remained closed.
