The Attic

                    - Satyajit Ray

1. Give a detailed account of all thoughts and questions in the narrator's mind while accompanying Aditya from the tea shop to Sanyal’s house.

There were a lot of thoughts and questions in the narrator's mind while accompanying Aditya from the tea shop to Sanyal's houseThey visited Nagen’s tea shop and the narrator noticed a sudden change in Aditya's expression when Sanyal recited a poem. The narrator asked him the reason for it but Aditya did not answer him. When they reached Aditya's ancestral house, he was anxious to search a medal in the attic. He also wanted to find out the weight of the medal. When the narrator questioned what it was, Aditya replied that he would know it soon. All these actions of Aditya created a sense of curiosity and confusion in the mind of the narrator until the incident behind it was revealed at the house of Sanyal.

2. ‘Man does change with time’-What were the various changes that came about in Aditya?

In his childhood, Aditya was jealous of Sanyal's achievements. Though Aditya was a fairly good student, he could not beat Sanyal. Once Sanyal received a medal for his recitation of Tagore's poem. Aditya got it from Sanyal to show it to his father but never returned it. Aditya lied that he had lost it. He happens to meet Sanyal after 29 years. Now Aditya is more refined man. It is obvious from his intention to pay back thirty times than the value of the medal. He is no more a jealous but a repentant soul. Aditya used to tell lies when he was a child. But now when Sanyal reveals the misdeed of Aditya, he does not deny it. He accepts that all the grievances and  anger of Sanyal were justifiedThese are the changes in Aditya which time and life have made it possible.

3.Give a brief character sketch of Sasanka Sanyal.

In his childhood, Sasanka Sanyal was an intelligent student. Though Aditya was a fairly good student he could not beat Sanyal. Once Sanyal received a medal for his recitation of Tagore's poem. Aditya got it from Sanyal to show it to his father but never returned it. Aditya lied that he had lost it. He happened to meet Sanyal after 29 years. Sanyal did not fight for it or embarrass him publicly. He left the place with the recitation of the poem which reminded Aditya of the incident. Sanyal proves him to be a matured person. He always paid for what he ate at Nagen’s tea shop. Sasanka Sanyal remains to be a man of self respect. When Aditya was ready to pay 30 times more than the value of the medal, he declined it saying that he wanted only the medal.. He is not greedy though he lived in absolute poverty.
