I. Short Answers

1. Describe the grandfather as seen in the portrait.

            The grandfather wore a big turban and loose fitting clothes. He had a white beard. He looked like a hundred years old man.

2. Why was the author left with his grandmother in the village?

The young author was left with his grandmother until his parents settled well in the city.

3. Where did the author study in his childhood?

The author studied in the village school attached to the temple.

4. Why did the grandmother accompany the author to school?

            As the school was attached to the temple, she accompanied the author to school.

5. What made the dogs follow the grandmother after school hours?

            The grandmother carried stale chapattis and fed the dogs.

6. Why didn’t the grandmother feel sentimental when the author went abroad for higher education?

            She was strong minded, accepted the changes and engaged herself in other activities.       

7. What was the happiest time of the day for grandmother?

             In the afternoon, grandmother spent half an hour for feeding hundreds of sparrows with little bits of bread.

8. Describe the author’s grandmother.

            The author's grandmother was old, short, slightly bent. Her face had more wrinkles. She was deeply religious.

9. What was the daily routine of the grandmother at home?

            Every morning, she woke up her grandson and got him ready for school. She took him to the school and read scriptures in the temple. She returned home in the evening.

10. How is school education in the village different from that in the city?

            In the village school, the alphabet and morning prayers are taught. In the city school, English words, western science, the law of gravity, Archimedes' principle etc..., are taught.

11. The grandmother appreciated the value of education. Give instances in support of your answer.

            She often asked him about the lessons he learnt in school. When the author decided to go to abroad, she didn't oppose it.

12. The grandmother was strong-minded. Justify.

            The grandmother accepted the seclusion and she was not sentimental when  the author went abroad for higher studies. She could even predict her death and die peacefully.

13. How did the grandmother spend the last few hours of her life?

            She did not talk to anyone. She lay peacefully in bed praying with her beads. Suddenly her lips stopped moving and the rosary fell from her lifeless fingers.

 

II. Paragraph

The young author was left with his grandmother until his parents settled well in the city. The author studied in the village school attached to the temple. Every morning, she woke up her grandson and got him ready for school. She took him to the school and read scriptures in the temple. She returned home in the evening. In the afternoon, grandmother spent half an hour for feeding hundreds of sparrows with little bits of bread. The grandmother accepted the seclusion and she was not sentimental when the author went abroad for higher studies. She could even predict her death and die peacefully. On that day all the birds came and did not make any noise paying respect to the grandmother.
